چکیده

To date, the most important application area of DIS/HLA technology has been training. However, there is increasing interest from other potential user communities, in particular the research, design and engineering world. Here, Distributed Virtual Environments are expected to be used in various kinds of collaborative tasks, ranging from concept studies and requirements analysis, through the actual design process, to system integration, testing, and validation. Effective collaboration between geographically remote researchers, designers and engineers requires a highly interactive and immersive distributed virtual environment to aid their decision making processes. A platform for general collaborative distributed virtual environments is currently being developed in the COVEN project within the European Advanced Communication Technology and Services (ACTS) programme. COVEN makes use of general purpose COTS VE. In order to support collaborative RD&E tasks, a number of communication primitives and special purpose virtual objects are introduced. The latter are dynamic objects which can be manipulated by the users, and influence each other’s states, for example manipulatable spreadsheets. Recently, an extension to the COVEN project has been approved that will, among other things, investigate the use of DIS/HLA technology to meet the requirements of the highly interactive collaborative applications of COVEN. 1 This work has been carried out in the framework of the COVEN project, which aims at the development of teleworking and telepresence applications. The COVEN project participates in the Advanced Communication Technology and Services (ACTS) programme of the European Union.

DisTriB: Distributed Trust Management Model Based on Gossip Learning and Bayesian Networks in Collaborative Computing Systems

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...

CORBA-Based Collaboration in a Virtual Assembly Design Environment

The use of virtual environments to plan and evaluate assembly processes has been gaining significant acceptance in the engineering community. The prohibitive costs of immersive virtual environments and the availability of the internet have brought to the forefront the need for methods for sharing the virtual environment during the assembly evaluation process. This will support true collaborativ...

A Service-Oriented Architecture for a Collaborative Engineering Environment in Petroleum Engineering

In this paper we discuss the scenario of Petroleum Engineering projects at Petrobras, a large Brazilian governmental oil & gas company. Based on this scenario, we propose a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) for a Collaborative Problem Solving Environment (CPSE), that we call Collaborative Engineering Environment (CEE), responsible for controlling and executing specialized engineering projects...

Domain-Driven Reconfiguration in Collaborative Virtual Environments

When virtual environments (VE) collaborate to create a shared virtual world, events occur that can have catastrophic eeects on that virtual world. These events can be system events, such as the loss of a host or a network link to that host. They can also be events that happen only in the virtual world, for example, a virtual activity that migrates, bringing increased activity to a diierent VE. ...
